Why Copywriting Is Still a Premium Skill Despite AI

If you’re a freelancer looking for a service you can sell right now and charge a premium for, here’s my answer. It might surprise you – Copywriting.

Yes, in 2026-2027. In the age of ChatGPT and Claude.

Who am I to tell you this?

I’ve made more than $250,000 on Upwork, and a big part of that came from selling copywriting as a service. I’ve charged clients as much as $1,000 for a single article. You read that right. $1,000 per article.

“But ChatGPT already writes so well…” I know what you’re thinking.

AI can write pretty well these days. So why would a client hire a human writer? And why on earth would they pay a premium for it?Fair question.

Let me give you not one, but two good reasons.

Reason 1: AI writing is getting easier to spot

Tools like ChatGPT and Claude keep getting better at creative writing. That’s true. But at the same time, AI-written text is becoming easier to identify. In August 2026, Anthropic (the company behind Claude) announced that its newer Claude models now weave an invisible watermark into the text they generate. You can’t see it. But it can be detected, and it can survive copying and light editing. Google already does something similar with its Gemini models.

And here’s the part that matters for your clients’ business.

An SEO company called Graphite studied what actually ranks. They found that 86% of the articles ranking in Google Search were written by humans. Only 14% were AI-generated. Human writing also made up 82% of the articles cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity.

So when a client wants content that ranks on Google and gets cited by AI tools, human writing still wins.

Reason 2: Real writing is becoming a rare skill

Think about it. Everyone is using AI to write now. That means fewer and fewer people are actually practicing the craft. Writing, as a skill, is becoming rarer every single day. There are fewer writers out there who can do it without leaning on AI.

And basic economics kicks in. When something gets rare, it gets valuable.

More and more clients are now looking for people who can think, research and write on their own. People who bring real ideas, real experience and a real voice.

That’s exactly what they’re willing to pay a premium for.

So, what should you do?

If you genuinely love writing, this should sound like music to your ears. The market is crowded with AI-generated content. That makes a real writer stand out more, not less.

So stop doubting your skill.

Go out there and start pitching clients.
